Spanish Cheese

Spain has developed a surprising variety of now more than 100 different cheeses, 20 of which  have protective designations of origin (PDO) for cheese. A reason for this was that all autonomous regions have experienced a strong movement for the recognition and appreciation of their own identities and cultural characteristics, which includes catering – and of course this also includes cheese.

The many varieties of different cheeses match the climatic and geographic differences and the deeply rooted cattle breeding traditions. Many of the cheeses pictured here mirror the culture and long tradition of cheese production and consumption in Spain and show that Spain is a cheese producer of global significance.
